On Friday, November 8, 2024, the Nzema East Municipal Assembly organized the 40th National Farmers Day Celebration, held at Gwira Eshiem. This important annual event, which celebrates the contributions of Ghanaian farmers and fishers, took place under the theme, “Building Climate Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security.” The occasion was graced by notable dignitaries, including traditional leaders, government officials, and representatives of various agricultural and research institutions, highlighting the significance of the day to the Municipal and the nation at large.

The event saw the attendance of a wide array of prominent figures within the Municipal, reinforcing the importance of agriculture to the socio-economic development of the region. Also in attendance were chiefs and elders, assembly members, heads of departments and institutions, representatives from agricultural institutions, the press, award recipients, and members of the general public.

The ceremony was filled with insightful speeches from key stakeholders. Each address highlighted the day’s theme and the importance of building climate-resilient agricultural practices to ensure food security. Notable speeches were presented at the ceremony

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in his opening remarks welcomed all participants to the ceremony. He also expressed his gratitude to Management of Nzema East Municipal Assembly and Populace for such an occasion. He encouraged young people to see agriculture as a viable and rewarding career path.

Municipal Director for Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Asamoah highlighted ongoing Municipal initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity, particularly through farmer education programs on best practices in sustainable farming. He applauded the farmers for their resilience in facing challenges like changing weather patterns and noted how these efforts align with national policies to secure food resources.

Mr. Haruna Ridwan, Municipal Agric Director, focused on the importance of sustainability in cocoa and rubber production. He shared insights on programs to educate farmers on environmentally friendly practices, such as reducing pesticide use and adopting agroforestry techniques, which are key in achieving climate-resilient agriculture.

Honorable Eric Essien, Municipal Chief Executive, reiterated the Municipal’s dedication to supporting farmers through initiatives like providing subsidized farm inputs and improving access to credit facilities. He noted the Municipal’s commitment to developing road infrastructure, making it easier for farmers to transport their produce to markets.

He praised the contributions of farmers to the national economy. He outlined government efforts to empower farmers by ensuring they receive the necessary resources and training, emphasizing a focus on youth involvement in agriculture as a solution to employment challenges.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to outstanding farmers who had demonstrated excellence in various agricultural sectors. These awards recognized innovation, productivity, and dedication to sustainable practices. The top award of Municipal Best Farmer was presented to Mr. Yaw Sagba, an exemplary farmer whose achievements set a high standard for others in the Municipal. Other awards were presented to farmers in specific categories such as best vegetable farmer, best crop farmer, best animal farmer, best woman farmer, best youth farmer, best root and tuber crop farmer, best disability farmer amongst others..

Each awardee received prizes, including farming equipment, fertilizers intended to further support their efforts and inspire other farmers in the community. The awards segment underscored the Assembly’s commitment to motivating farmers and recognizing their vital contributions to the local economy.
