Nzema East Municipal Assembly celebrated this year’s 39th Farmers’ Day on Friday 24th November, 2023 in grand style at the Dadwen M /A Primary School Park to celebrate all farmers within the Municipality. The celebration, which was themed ‘Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience’ saw the presence of many dignitaries at the function including the Municipal Chief Executive, Municipal Coordinating Director, Municipal Director for Cocoa Health Extension Division, Assembly Members of the Nzema East Municipal Assembly, Chiefs, Institutions, the media and many others.
The MCE, Hon. Dorcas Elizabeth Amoah in her opening remarks welcomed everyone to the function and mentioned how important it was to celebrate farmers. He mentioned that agriculture was the backbone of this economy and without agriculture, the nation would go on its knees. She then mentioned the Municipal should pay very close attention to agriculture. She concluded her opening remarks by encouraging more youth to venture into agriculture.
The District Director for Agriculture; Mr Haruna Ridwan, commended the awardees for their immense support for the development of the country. He also stated that there are a lot of opportunities for anyone who wishes to enter into agriculture. He elaborated on the Planting for Food and Jobs program Phase 2 that was launched by the Minister for Agriculture a few weeks ago. He mentioned that the phase two of this government flagship program would create more jobs in agriculture and urged all persons to take advantage of the program. He also mentioned that everyone who wished to benefit from the program should first and foremost register with the Municipal Agric Department so that field extension officers would be assigned to them. He also encouraged farmers to come together to form Farmer Based Organizations in order to have a united front.
Seventeen (17) award winners received prizes during the ceremony ranging from best farmers in various crops, best agribusiness enterprise, best farmers in various animal farms, and best disability farmer amongst others. The best amongst them (overall best farmer) received a motor cycle, 1 knapsack spraying machine, 1 Cocoa Solo spraying machine, 3 pairs of field boots, 1 packet of cutlass 1 double size mattress, packet of roofing sheets and a certificate.
