THE NZEMA EAST MUNICIPAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE VISITS TO FLOOD-AFFECTED AREAS AT GWIRAMAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, BAMIAKOR, AND ENVIRONS ON WEDNESDAY, 18TH JUNE, 2026.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Herbert Kuah Dickson, paid a visit to the flooded Gwiraman Senior High School and other to affected communities to obtain first-hand information on the situation.

During the visit, he addressed mining activities around the Ankobra River, both legal and illegal. He also discussed how the ongoing rainfall has affected Gwira Bamiankor township and surrounding communities.

The MCE indicated that heavy rains have flooded the Gwiraman Senior High School compound for the past month, disrupting academic work and leaving students stranded. Following discussions with the headmistress and staff, a temporary suspension of academic activities was identified as the most viable option to prevent any potential danger to students attempting to cross floodwaters to attend school. He was assured that school management would make up for lost contact hours when students return after the rains subsided.

Hon. Herbert Kuah Dickson stated that the flooding was not caused by buildings obstructing waterways or choked gutters. Instead, it resulted from the Ankobra River overflowing its banks due to heavy rainfall. He noted that the school’s proximity to parts of the riverbank has contributed to the flooding.

The Municipal Chief Executive attributed the situation to excessive mining along the banks of the Ankobra River and in surrounding communities. He concluded that resolving the problem would require proper planning, significant investment, or relocation, which would be long-term measures.
